I don’t know what it is about apartments in Singapore, but they all have the same window treatments. I looked at more than 20 apartments before we chose this building – some were uber modern, some were older, some were trapped in the 1970s – and all, save for one, had the same style of pinch pleated drapes. Shudder.
Here are the drapes in our place from when we first moved in this past weekend. I don’t know what it is about them, but the drapes – the way they meet in the center, the tie backs, the flow of the swag – they make me feel like I should be in an old, stuffy apartment building in Brooklyn sitting shiva with all the old jews in the neighborhood. These are my grandmother’s drapes. These are not the window treatments that belong in a brand-spanking-new apartment building. Please, for the love of style, I would have settled for roller blinds!
We have top-of-the-line, brand-new, super-efficient Miele appliances! We have a rain shower! We have a private elevator entrance!!!! All of these things scream modern and new, but then there are the drapes. Oh, those pinch pleated drapes that aren’t even hung above the windows. I just can’t get past them.
Thankfully when the maintenance guy showed up yesterday to fix the drain in our shower he had a ladder with him. With barely a “hey, would you mind if I borrowed that?” I grabbed the ladder from him and proceded to unhook the drapes from their shared track guide so that they now fully open.
Being able to open the drapes fully certainly helps, but the window treatments still don’t fit in with the place. Our stuff arrives tomorrow. Having some furniture in the place will definitely change the feel in here, but I doubt those items will change the feel enough to make me get over the drapes.
